Overview

Day Nursery Centre is a network of four Winnipeg inner city child care centres.  The Gretta Brown, Kennedy, Crossways and Kid Gloves units provide early learning and childcare to 184 children and support for their families.

Established in 1909 by the Mother’s Association of Winnipeg, Day Nursery Centre is the longest running child care program in Canada west of the great lakes. The very first program started its operation in Winnipeg’s North End and we continue to serve that community as well as Winnipeg’s Central Park, Centennial and West Broadway neighbourhoods.

Day Nursery Centre is a nonprofit charitable organization and is licensed under the Province of Manitoba Family Services, providing safe, nurturing and stimulating environments for infants and preschoolers.

Day Nursery Centre is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors compromised of parent and community representatives.

We are staffed by qualified personnel which includes an Executive Director, Centre Directors, Early Childhood Educators, Child Care Assistants and Administrative Staff.

At Day Nursery Centre we believe that children are competent capable learners full of wonder and ideas and deserve learning environments that honour them.   We offer a play-based, child-centered approach, emergent curriculum and hold a deep respect for our environment, offering children many opportunities to connect with nature.    We use a pedagogical approach when working with children and our educators, using reflective thinking practices and value open-ended opportunities to explore thought and delve into deeper thinking.

We believe that each moment we share with children offers us an opportunity to build positive relationships and create an atmosphere that nurtures children, educators and families. We encourage children to pursue their passions and interests through environments that invite them to explore, collaborate, reflect and communicate using a wide range of resources and materials.  Growing and learning together is a lifelong journey that happens every moment of every day.
